The challenge

A US energy storage company was scaling its engineering organization and facing increasingly complex decisions about architecture, materials, and product configurations. Individual engineers were strong on point analyses but the team did not yet have a shared framework for evaluating decisions across multiple competing value attributes (cost, performance, schedule, reliability) under uncertainty about future market conditions. The team needed a common decision language and a tool that could scale beyond Excel.

What we did together

Over three days on-site, the engineering team learned and applied Multi-Attribute Tradespace Exploration (MATE) and Epoch-Era Analysis (EEA) to a live project of their choosing. Day 1: the seven constructs of complex systems engineering, stakeholder identification, value modeling, the Design-Value Matrix. Day 2: tradespace generation, sampling strategies, Pareto analysis, Epoch-Era Analysis for future uncertainty. Day 3: hands-on with EpochShift on the team’s real problem, including data import, value model elicitation, and tradespace exploration. The engagement included a three-month trial of EpochShift for Teams for ten users.

Outcomes

  • The team left the workshop with a working MATE study on their own problem, not a textbook example.
  • A shared decision language across roles (engineering, product, leadership) replaced ad-hoc spreadsheet debates.
  • EpochShift continued to be used after the workshop, with the team building on the Day 3 starting point.

Why this matters for similar teams

Energy, automotive, aerospace, defense, and industrial engineering teams routinely face the same class of problem: too many design alternatives, too much future uncertainty, and decision processes that rely on individual intuition rather than a shared value model. The Tradespace Accelerator gives the team the methods (MATE, EEA), the tools (EpochShift), and the shared language to make those decisions defensible and repeatable.

Next step

If your team faces similar decisions and you completed MIT xPro Course 4 (or want a similar capability), a fifteen-minute conversation is the next step. The Tradespace Accelerator package is $25,400 plus travel scoped per client for the 3-month term and includes the 3-day on-site engagement and a 3-month EpochShift for Teams license for ten users with support.
